Why Drainable Bowls?

Standing water isn’t just unsightly — it can be deadly. News in Arizona has shown dogs becoming sick or dying after drinking from unsafe water sources.

According to the American Kennel Club, communal bowls that don’t drain can harbor bacteria, parasites, and viruses that spread quickly at busy dog parks.

That’s why each Sleeping Dog Bowl is designed with a drain — fresh water in, old water out. A simple design choice that keeps dogs safer.

Health & Safety Facts

  • Heatstroke is fast & dangerous. Warning signs include frantic panting, heavy drool, bright-red gums, and labored breathing—seek urgent care. [AKC, AVMA]
  • Dehydration magnifies heat injury. Early heat illness is tied to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance; fast access to water helps. [PetMD]
  • Dog-park pathogen risk exists. Leptospirosis risk rises with contact at parks/boarding; vaccines are available (initial 2-dose series + annual boosters). [CDC, ACVIM]
  • Standing water ⇒ Giardia risk. Avoid ponds/creeks; drain bowls to limit exposure. [CDC, CAPC]
  • Drainable bowls = safer hydration. Cement bowls that drain discourage bacteria and parasites while keeping water fresh for every pup. [Sleeping Dog Project]
